CRELLA
CRELLA (Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment) is a research centre at the University of Bedfordshire, Luton. It was established in 2005 when Cyril Weir took up the Powdrill Chair in English Language Acquisition, and has since become one of the largest concentrations of language-testing researchers in the UK. Current direction sits with Anthony (Tony) Green; REF 2021 rated its output world-leading in language learning and assessment.
The centre's signature contribution is the Socio-Cognitive Framework for test development and validation, first articulated in Weir (2005) and extended across CRELLA's programme. The framework links test-taker characteristics, cognitive processing, task demand, scoring, and consequences into a single validity argument, and has been adopted by Cambridge Assessment English, the British Council, and other major testing bodies. Work clusters around cognitive validity of reading, listening, and writing tests, CEFR alignment, and criterial features separating proficiency levels.
