Immersive technology brings virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), 360° video and the wider family of extended reality (XR) to bear on language learning, placing learners inside simulated or digitally augmented environments where they can use the target language in context. VR replaces the visible world with a computer-generated one through a headset; AR overlays digital information onto the real surroundings; 360° video drops the learner into a real recorded scene they can look around. The shared promise is that learners stop reading about ordering coffee in Paris and instead stand in a virtual café and do it.
Two constructs do the theoretical heavy lifting. Immersion is an objective property of the system, the degree to which it surrounds the senses and shuts out the physical world; a head-mounted display with spatial audio is more immersive than a phone screen. Presence is the subjective result, the felt sense of "being there" in the virtual scene rather than in the room. When presence is high, the argument goes, the brain treats the simulated encounter much like a real one, so language practised there transfers more readily. This is what distinguishes immersive technology from earlier screen-based computer-assisted language learning: the goal is not richer content but a convincing situation the learner inhabits.
The pedagogical case rests on a few affordances. Immersive environments support situated and embodied practice, letting learners rehearse language tied to place, action and gesture rather than decontextualised drills, an emphasis that resonates with the physical-response tradition of TPR and with multimodal learning that combines image, sound and movement. They offer low-anxiety rehearsal: a virtual shopkeeper does not judge, so learners can repeat a transaction until it feels fluent, which speaks directly to reducing language anxiety. They enable virtual travel and exchange, putting a target-culture setting within reach of learners who cannot physically go, a natural complement to virtual exchange. And because much of this runs on phones, immersive practice overlaps with the on-the-move logic of mobile-assisted language learning and the broader ambitions of technology-enhanced language learning.
Evidence is growing but young, and honest accounts report promise rather than proof. Yu-Ju Lan's (2020) review in Language Learning & Technology surveys VR's potential for foreign-language learning through immersion, interaction and experience-oriented design, and maps where the technology was heading. The most cited synthesis, Dhimolea, Kaplan-Rakowski and Lin's (2022) systematic review of high-immersion VR for language learning in TechTrends, examined 32 studies from 2015–2020 and reached a deliberately measured conclusion: learners' perceptions of VR are positive, multiple exposures appear necessary for benefit, and VR helps contextual vocabulary learning, but its overall effectiveness on language outcomes remains inconclusive. That phrase matters. The field has many enthusiastic small studies and few that would satisfy a sceptic about durable gains.
The reservations are concrete. The novelty effect confounds early results: learners engage because the technology is new, and that initial enthusiasm fades, so short-term excitement is a poor proxy for lasting learning. Cybersickness, the nausea and disorientation some users feel in VR, is common enough to limit session length and to exclude some learners entirely, and headsets remain uncomfortable over time. Cost and access are real barriers, since headsets, capable phones and the staff time to author content are unevenly distributed across schools and learners. The longitudinal evidence is thin, with little research following self-directed VR learners over months, which is precisely the window where the novelty effect would wash out and true effects would show. And hardware churn keeps moving the target: platforms and devices are superseded fast, so materials built for one headset can be orphaned before their pedagogy is even evaluated, and research struggles to keep pace.
Adopt immersive tools for what they uniquely do, not for spectacle. Reserve VR and AR for situations that genuinely benefit from presence and embodiment, such as rehearsing high-stakes spoken exchanges or visiting culturally rich settings, rather than tasks a worksheet handles as well. Keep sessions short to head off cybersickness and offer a non-immersive alternative so no learner is shut out. Build in repeated, purposeful exposure rather than a one-off demonstration, since the research points to multiple uses as the condition for benefit. Treat immersive practice as one stage in a sequence with pre-teaching and reflection around it, and evaluate outcomes against learning, not against how impressed students were on the first day.
