Trinity DipTESOL
The Licentiate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, awarded by Trinity College London, is a postgraduate-level ELT qualification regulated at Level 7 of the Ofqual Regulated Qualifications Framework — equivalent to the Cambridge DELTA and aimed at experienced teachers seeking senior, training, or academic-management roles.
Eligibility and orientation
Candidates need at least two years' full-time teaching experience and an initial qualification such as the Trinity CertTESOL or CELTA. The diploma is consciously practitioner-focused: assessment centres on the application of theory to classroom decisions, on the candidate's own teaching context, and on documented professional development rather than on academic essays alone.
Four assessment units
Trinity organises the DipTESOL into four units that together cover language systems, pedagogy, phonology, and professional development.
Unit 1 is a three-hour written examination on language, learning and teaching, and professional development.
Unit 2 is a coursework portfolio of three assignments rooted in classroom practice — a self-designed observation instrument, a developmental record of the candidate's own teaching, and an independent research project.
Unit 3 is an externally assessed thirty-minute interview on phonology, including a prepared talk and a phonemic transcription exercise. This phonology weighting is one of the diploma's distinctive features.
Unit 4 is observed classroom teaching: four hours assessed internally and one hour assessed externally.
Position in the field
Alongside the DELTA, the DipTESOL is one of the two qualifications that anglophone language schools and ministries most often accept as evidence of senior ELT competence. It is offered by validated centres worldwide in face-to-face, blended, and online modes, with the externally assessed components (Unit 1 examination, Unit 3 interview, Unit 4 observed teaching) administered by Trinity moderators.
