Attribution theory explains motivation through the reasons learners give themselves for why they succeeded or failed. After a result lands, a student does not simply record the grade; they ask why, and the answer they settle on shapes what they expect next time, how they feel, and whether they keep trying. Bernard Weiner built the dominant version of this idea in educational psychology, arguing that the causal explanation matters more for future behaviour than the outcome itself.
In achievement settings Weiner found that learners reach for a small set of explanations. The four that dominate are ability ("I'm good at this"), effort ("I worked hard"), task difficulty ("the test was easy"), and luck ("I got lucky with the questions"). A learner who fails a speaking test might blame any of these, and which one they pick predicts very different next moves. Blaming weak preparation points toward studying more; blaming a lack of talent points toward giving up.
The four causes are not what does the work. Each can be sorted along three underlying dimensions, and those dimensions drive the consequences.
Locus of causality asks whether the cause sits inside the person (ability, effort) or outside (task difficulty, luck). Stability asks whether the cause holds steady over time (ability is usually felt as fixed; effort and luck vary). Controllability asks whether the learner can change the cause (effort is controllable; aptitude, mood, and luck are not). The same word can shift dimensions: "I didn't try" is internal, unstable, and controllable, while "I'm just not a languages person" is internal, stable, and uncontrollable.
Each dimension governs a different downstream effect, which is the theory's real payoff. Stability drives expectancy of success: if a learner blames failure on something stable like low ability, they expect to fail again, whereas blaming an unstable cause like insufficient revision leaves the door open. Locus and controllability drive emotion: success attributed to one's own effort produces pride, while failure attributed to a controllable cause produces guilt, and failure pinned on something uncontrollable produces shame or hopelessness. Persistence follows from the combination. The motivating profile is internal, unstable, and controllable, because it tells the learner that more effort can change the result. The corrosive profile is internal, stable, and uncontrollable, which tells the learner that trying is pointless.
That second profile is the engine of learned helplessness, the passive resignation that sets in when a learner concludes that outcomes lie beyond their control. The link to Growth Mindset is direct: Carol Dweck's fixed mindset is, in attribution terms, the habit of explaining failure through stable, uncontrollable ability, and the growth mindset reframes the same failure as unstable, controllable effort and strategy. Note that attribution theory's "fundamental attribution error" label is unrelated; the Fundamental attribution error is a social-psychology bias about over-reading others' behaviour as dispositional, not a claim about achievement motivation.
Marion Williams and Robert Burden brought attribution thinking into second-language learning. Interviewing learners of French aged 10 to 15 in England, they found that students judged their own success largely through external markers, namely teacher approval, marks, and grades, and that the range of attributions widened with age though many reasons stayed superficial. Their central finding was that attributions depend heavily on context: the person, the culture, the family, the learning setting, age, gender, and the specific task all shape what a learner counts as a cause. This pushed L2 motivation research away from treating attributions as fixed traits and toward reading them as situated, teachable interpretations.
The theory rests on retrospective self-report, and that is its weakest joint. Asking a learner after the fact why they failed taps reconstructed memory, which drifts toward current beliefs and may not match how the attribution actually formed, so the ecological validity of the data is contested. The framework is also culture-dependent in a way that complicates its prescriptions. Internal-attribution training assumes the Western, individualist pattern of crediting personal traits, but learners from collectivist backgrounds are often taught to attribute outcomes to effort, modesty, and situation, so retraining toward internal causes can be culturally inappropriate or counterproductive. Finally, intervention effects are uneven: attributional retraining (coaching learners to reattribute failure to controllable causes) helps low and average performers in some studies but produces modest and inconsistent gains overall, and works less reliably for students who were already doing well.
Feedback can be framed to steer attributions toward the motivating profile. Praise a result by naming the controllable cause ("your revision strategy paid off") rather than a stable trait ("you're a natural"), so success stays repeatable and failure stays fixable. When a learner reads a setback as proof of fixed inability, the practical move is to surface an unstable, controllable cause they can act on next time, such as a study method or a specific skill gap. Hold these reframings lightly across cultures: for learners raised to value modesty, pushing hard for internal self-credit may misfire, and effort-focused framing usually travels better than ability-focused framing.
